This Sepedi drama introduces Masetesete’s first encounter with love. When he falls deeply in love with mologadi, the union begins with promise and affection. However, the relationship is soon tested by conflicting expectations. Mologadi aspires to an extravagant and better life, while Masetesete is unemployed and economically vulnerable. Driven by material desire, Mologadi pressures Masetesete to secure loans from mashonisa (informal moneylenders). Conscious of his inability to pay, Masetesete strongly resists this demand, demonstrating moral responsibility in the face of poverty. As tension escalates, Mologadi consults MpotŠiŠe, who directs her to a darker alternative, advising her to seek intervention from a traditional healer to compel Masetesete’s obedience. Ultimately, Masetesete succumbs to the burden of debt, and loans begin to suffocate him. The play critically explores themes of love, gendered power, economic pressure, financial exploitation, and the intersection of traditional and modernity. Through accessible Sepedi language and compelling conflict, it invites readers to question: did Mologadi finally obtain the life she desired? A must read for lovers of African literature.
